Faded, gauzy #dreampop to help kick off your 2016 with yearning and regret, courtesy of Charlotte Lindèn Ercoli Coe, aka Charles. Charlotte, who seems to be from LA but who knows, saysThat's How Baby Learns was "produced by me in my bed", and the record elicits similarly warped vibes as the earliest jams from the likes of Ariel Pink, Puro Instinct, Nite Jewel, and other hazy '80s-indebted pop hypnagogists...
The annual Los Angeles-based FYF Fest was humble in size, sweet and yet progressively cool -- like Coachella's little sister that borrowed its clothes. We got to spend the day hopping to shows, eating colored popsicles, and thanking the universe we'd worn proper shoes. All the while getting to hang with the bands that make the heat worth it. Between finding abandoned kitchen sinks with Toro y Moi or snapping shots next to Morrissey's "Vegan" crew vans with Neon Indian — Fuck Yeah Fest didn't disappoint. // photos + words byClaire McKinzie
Check out more of Claire's shots + recap from FYF — including Lower Dens, HEALTH, Mac Demarco, DJ Dodger Stadium, Ed Droste oF Grizzly Bear, and more — after the jump…
Here's a balmy summer night jam from LA electronic pop composer Lauren Hillman, aka Kotomi. "Swimming" has a warm, intoxicating vibe, thanks in part to Hillman's soothing vocals and the welcome appearance of some gloriously woozy lap steel, and is the latest in a series of singles that Kotomi is releasing for free download on the first Tuesday of each month...
California "kaleidoscopic pop" duo Bouquet follow up one of the most dreamily beautiful tracks of the year with their haunting debut EP, In A Dream. From the warm and gently woozy opening track, to the jaunty/slightly creepy longing of "Come To Your House", the gorgeous, bittersweet melancholy of "Over the Mountains", and the lilting, romantic dream pop perfection of "Falling", it's a lean and lovely record that lulls, soothes, and renews in just under 20 minutes. In A Dream is out next week on limited 10" via Ulrike/Folktale Records. Listen:
