We're psyched to debut this rather auspicious introduction from London duo audiobooks, aka visual artist/singer/model Evangeline Ling + producer/mixer David Wrench (Frank Ocean, Jamie xx, Goldfrapp, FKA Twigs, etc.). The new Heavenly signees have already caused a stir in their hometown with their first live shows; Drowned In Sound invoked the Slits and Aphex Twin in their review of audiobooks' first-ever set, the great Gwenno was floored by one of the duo's "surreal" performances, and The Quietus called Wrench a "benevolent, beautiful, disco-fingered wizard" and Ling "a startling combination of Mark E Smith and Björk" after a recent London gig. This kind of enthusiasm feels warranted upon first listen to the duo's thrilling lead single "Gothenburg", a spectral avant-pop song cloaked in an ominous mechanical haze that manages to enchant and disquiet at once. Ling's otherworldly vocals hover over Wrench's shadowy, grinding production, her ethereal and seductive whispers lulling us into a hypnotic state before devolving into an eerie, guttural growl that verges on demonic. The duo tells us about the track:

“We wrote and recorded Gothenburg on the first day we hung out after meeting by chance the previous night. It captures the energy and excitement at the outset of a creative friendship.”

More coming soon. Listen to "Gothenburg" in the dark below:
