Digable Planets played to a rare, exceedingly enthusiastic Tuesday night crowd at the Granada Theater here in Dallas last night. Although nostalgia definitely played its part in creating the overwhelming positive vibe in the room, the DPs stepped up and delivered what was probably the best hip-hip show here in town since the last time they rolled through. The group played (often re-worked versions of) most of their classic Reachin' and Blowout Comb joints over the course of their nearly 2-hour set, which was propelled by a tight live drummer and Jedi's thick-ass beats. We were also treated to what sounded like new material from the great Ishmael Butler (Butterfly), who I'd argue is one of the most underrated MCs from the tail end of hip-hop's golden age, and the dude has only improved over time. Now if they'd just release some new shit already.
