Hopefully the power that was exhibited on her first two singles will begin to resurface because this is not a good song. I blame the beat mostly though.

Yeah, I think Stay Away was better, but this is still a pretty decent pop song. Those synthpad-y chords that play during the chorus are really beautiful.

this is fucking awful. having been an avid reader and trusted your judgment for years, it saddens me each time i realize im having garbage sneakily stuffed into all my orifices, leaving me bubbling and hissing like a pig on a spit whenever you pass off terrible music as something cool and significant. the rate at which this has been happening has been increasing sharply over the last year. you guys have shown me some amazing music that i would never have heard otherwise over the past few years, for that im very grateful. im sorry to say that it seems that the tides have turned, on a regular basis you’re exposing me and other readers to all sorts of rubbish that we never would have gone near if it hadnt been posted on this blog.
nah i’m not trying to “pass off” anything. do you feel the same way about her other songs? if you don’t like anything she’s done then your opinion on this song isn’t really valid to me, sorry bebe

hey chris, apologies for the language in the last post, iv been sitting at home with a sinus infection all day feeling very negative. i do think that this is very poor and that most of her stuff is mediocre. do you think this music is strong enough and has enough merit on a purely musical basis to warrant praise? i believe that if we disregard the visual style and presentation of charli xcx then there is little to separate her from other british female pop artists like marina & the diamonds, ellie goulding etc, which is not to say that there is anything wrong with that type of music at all, just that it doesnt nearly meet the standard of some of the great music this blog has been concerned with. i think if aggregating trendy reference points, whether visually or within the music, and presenting them in some easily digestable way where musical quality is subordinate to style is met with praise in places like this then something is very wrong. this is only my opinion and gorilla vs bear is an awesome blog. thanks for replying.
thanks, no apology necessary. while i will concede that this isn’t her best song, i absolutely think it warrants any and all praise/attention it’s receiving on this site and others. i hear the marina comparison a lot and it makes sense on a pretty superficial level i guess, but what sets charli apart (for me, anyway) is the songwriting. in my opinion charli (in her admittedly small body of work) has displayed far better pop songwriting sensibilities and impeccable taste in collaborators (Ariel Rechsthaid, who is almost always great, and Patrik Berger on this track).
and of course it’s impossible to fully disregard visual aesthetics/presentation so why even pretend to try. i just feel like she gets it. did you listen to her new mixtape? and out of curiosity, what new pop music do you feel is good enough to be mentioned?
