memoryhouse – Lately (troisieme) really blew me away this year, thought it should’a made the list, but all in all pretty good year in review.
yeah i like that one a lot, but my favorite version of it (deuxieme) was around in ’09
Memoryhouse’s “Lately (Troisieme)” is by far the best song featured on GvB in 2010. Listening to it is a meaningful, transporting experience. That Ariel Pink song, on the other hand, is a tongue-in-cheek, wouldn’t-it-b-funny-if-we-acted-like-a-cringeworthy-70′s-act rehash. I do like joke bands as much as the next person, but I think a #1 ranking is a bit too much.
It’s not the band’s image that is ranked, it’s what they produced. “Round and Round” is the best song of 2010.
“Haters gonna hate, they always will. . .” Have you ever listened to any Ariel Pink besides Round and Round? The man deserves all the credit he can get. Sit back. . .
I thought the lists were amazing..until i noticed “Cee Lo – Fuck You” wasnt on there. crazy
yeah i’m sure that one will place near the top of every objective “best songs” list, but it faded real fast for me.
i agree.
I just picture Carlton doing the ‘Carlton’ dance to that track. Don’t think I’ve ever heard it straight through.
good list gorillavsbear! but here’s some that should’ve made the list. (just sayin’)
serena maneesh – i just want to see your face
teenage reverb – beach witch
flight – turns to blood
wild nothing – your rabbit feet
frankie rose and the outs – hollow life
crystal stilts – shake the shackles
telenovelas – bloody mary
twin shadow – slow
still corners – endless summer
xray eyeballs – egyptian magician
girls – substance
minks – funeral song
minks – ophelia
weekend – coma summer
dum dum girls – blank girl
alright i’m gonna stop now
Yeah, Crystal Stilts’ Shake the Shackles definitely should have been included, but not a bad list overall.
ok, one more….
la sera – never come around
Nice list – -missing HTDW Ecstasy With Jojo.
i love GVB lists, but
i choose from there
and create a top eleven:
25 Kanye West – Blame Game (edit)
39 Kanye West – Runaway (feat. Pusha T)
47 Toro y Moi – Low Shoulder
60 Wavves – King of the Beach
2. Beach House – Walk in the Park
18. Beach House – 10 Mile Stereo
20. Delorean – Stay Close
22. Crystal Castles – Not in Love (feat. Robert Smith)
25. Games – Strawberry Skies
34. ceo – Come With Me
50. El Guincho – Bombay
good list. but not even a tinkle of BEST COAST.
there were a few artists (best coast, salem) whose best songs came out last year, despite them releasing LPs in 2010. best coast had a few songs on our list in ’09, and SALEM was on both our ’08 and ’09 lists
Pure Ecstasy?
great list… Hold On! needs more beach house.
Good list…digging that you have Big Boi & Morning Benders on here. :)
Gorilla vs Bear – Best of 2010 #Spotify playlist: http://bit.ly/fW6pAU
not much to say. a few songs i like on the list, like das racist, flocka, air waves, and maybe one or two others. you are HUGELY into that one style of music, the uh washed out everything, cheap electric piano drum patterns and droning female vocals. you love that like a LOT. it is hard to even understand how many artists you were able to find that fit this description.
i’d say the majority of this list is not that
none of these tracks fit on what you described …
Come on now.. just say it. You mean chillwave. And you’re wrong ;)
Good list still a couple of songs i think should be on here but thats always the case for everyone…
im saying
in the water – beat connection
(or sunburn or silver sceen even all amazing songs i keep switching which is my fave)
if you want it – tv girl
and i think that
i can’t wait is actually a better song than castles in the snow, but again opinion i guess.
oh also if anyone uses spotify i made a playlist of this list.. you need some files as local files but theres still about half of the tracks that work without this might just save you some time, thought i may as well share it
http://open.spotify.com/user/marritt/playlist/6nt9d75HzOeEaT94C5oM3f
this is a sick list. chris’ is basically my own.
Glad to see Candy Claws get some recognition. I feel like they didn’t get enough love for putting out a record as good as Hidden Lands.
‘lina’ at #40 and #37? diggin that you threw in some disco.
The only glaring ommision I see is Sharon Van Etten’s “Love More”. Best song of 2010.
glad to see at least one jj song… everyone forgot about them in 2010..
º3 was definitely not as good as º2, but it had some pretty good songs… and it grew on me after many listens…
You’re right, jj rules. And My Way wasn’t even a good song, what about My Life, Let Them and my summer hit Let Go?
really pleased to see Hard in Da Paint so high in your list. That song is reallllyy good
Solid list.
I agree with the list – I think WU LYF’s Heavy Pop was my favorite of the year though.
love that song a lot, but it’s from last year http://www.gorillavsbear.net/2009/12/09/heavy-pop/
heads up 28 Air Waves – Knockout came out last year too
I disagree with some of the songs. I can’t friggin’ wrap my head around the fact that your list is not exactly the same as mine is going to be. Jeez. Good list tho but really should be exactly what mine’s gonna be while at the same time being exactly what all these other fellas’ lists are/will be. For reals, get your act together.
i hate the crap out of arcade fire. they sound like a nissan commercial. Odessa should have been closer to top ten and yall were weak on wild nothing. “bored games” is insane. and i think “Mr. Fingers” owns screens so hard. and joanna newsom i guess is just not my kind of thing…and the morning benders is cheeseyyyy…like really cheesey….
no need to feel bad about ranking your forest family songs… they are legitimately amongst the very best of the year. especially the cults/gauntlet hair stuff!
great lists.
(agreed, five great ones.)
Integrity: this site maintains it; conscientious, refreshing.
chris i adore you
i adore you too
i am soooo glad i see Alsatian Darn on this list…. that track is soooooo underrated …… anyways, great great list!
really like this list. actually very surprised by how much i agree with it. maybe i just read your blog too much and now i’ve been brainwashed to like what you like. good picture, too, as always.
where is glasser???!
Cracking list(s) boys shame not to see any Woods on there ‘Blood Dries Darker’ and ‘Suffering Season’ are high up there for me as is Alex Bleeker ‘These Days’ Great call on Miracles Club as well though by the way. Fair play to ya
wow! wery good!
Nice mix but it needs more kid rock and ke$ha. just kiddin.
stop tellin em how to run their biz, people! make your own damn mix if you got sumpin tosay
keepin it real with ariel pink, HOLLLAAAAAAAAAA
No Girls FM?
And Everything Is Working? I don’t mean to impose my opinion. I just thought you loved those songs as much as I did. Did they not hold up in the long run for you?
Very solid list for a very solid year.. just wondering, why don’t you guys write some on why they are your favorite songs like you do for the top–top albums??
Yes, certainly missing memoryhouse. Most stunning affecting music. I saw them live and they seemed to have good souls. Good list overall. I bet you could catch up on missed songs. My friend posted this lovely media search site. http://frederickallen.net/media-search/ It is very simple and aesthetically pleasing. Just put the band/artist name in quotes and voila! Thanks for the solid line up.
Why do I feel like I’m the only one who really liked Gold Panda’s debut, ‘Luck Shiner’? The tracks ‘You’ and ‘Snow & Taxes’ are some of the best music of the year. I would think that you guys would love his stuff too…
CONgrads 2 CJ (CCU: COYOTE CLEAN UP) 4 making it ON dis list Just surfing the Web AND he’s A HOMIE of Mine! SHOUTOUTS OF to CCU n BRAINROTTER!
Morning Benders – Excuses (Yours Truly version) – YEEEES! This version it’s better than the LP version.
Good lists!
schweet shit. love how ariel pink was first. I also like that big boi and freddie gibbs were on it. wish star splinger was on the list though
thx for giving Deerhunter’s “He Would Have Laughed” due credit. an amazing song–best off the album in my opinion–that a lot of people skimmed over.
Does anyone else realize that wacka flacka is Kel from Keenan and Kel? That is all.
Veux – Late Key !
Always impressed with your lists! Along with this, I love how you tend to find female vocalists that I really enjoy, which is rare, and much appreciated! However… still cannot get hooked on Joanna Newsom, just never liked her sound. Would add Heaven’s on Fire to the list.
My god, I’ve been silenced. I can’t believe my comment complaining about Waka Flacka Flame was censored… Gorilla v Bear = fascists?
no, i just don’t approve idiotic comments from obvious trolls. try again, maybe you’ll have better luck next time.
I don’t understand how the comment was trolling. I truly consider Waka Flacka Flame to be an abominable rapper and I don’t understand the hype. What differentiates him from any other rapper using bad synthesized crunk beats and limited skills? I love hip hop, with artists like OutKast, Kanye, and MF DOOM (Madvillain in particular) being some of my all time favorites, but I do not appreciate Waka’s body of work. This is an honest statement and not trolling by any means.
Excellent list from an excellent blog. Thanks for a great year of music sharing!
Another 2010 list here: http://essentiallyeclectic.wordpress.com/
Is there an official Blame Game edit floating around? I wonder how many people have taken it upon themselves to cut out the Chris Rock monologue.
hey david.
hey david
david doesn’t read the blog
Yeah I do.
no you don’t.
glad you remembered warpaint!!!!!
Titus Andronicus though?? Why are they conspicuously missing from this entire blog?
