Just received two new limited 7″ singles in the mail from Italian label Hell, Yes!, including an unreleased jam from this kid‘s favorite band Dum Dum Girls — backed with previously blogged ballad “D.A.L.” for the first time on vinyl — and a new single from DDG’s new drummer Sandy Vu‘s other project, SISU. The Dum Dum Girls song is good and all, but i wish people didn’t sound so trendy….i wish they didn’t sound so echoey and lo-fi and 90′s….it’s just all so trendy….and i think, deep down in some of these new artists’ hearts, there is a slight grain of wanting to sound trendy….this sound is so common, that it must be so. i don’t think modern”indie” music is special. i think the “underground” and the “diferent” folks in society are just as ‘mainstream’ as the mainstream…the underground is a microcosm of america in general. there is such a formula.
I just wish rock n’roll would die and i wish something new would happen. It’s been 50 odd years, and we all need something else. rock n’ roll has become too trendy. You always know a subculture is dead when Wal-Mart, the Disney Channel and Yahoo marketing schemes try to play off of “hip” “under-dog” fashion…the chucks, the big glasses, the “urbanoutfitter” look…
We need something new. Maybe we look to the past for inspiration way too much and maybe we need to start being inspired by the present state of the world.
The Doors, The Velvet Underground, Pavement, MBV….all of this music is great….but it’s great because these artits were part of artistic movement and change and revoluition….and music has been stuck in a rut because this “movement and change and revolution” is no longer around…..i hate the fact that things are so typical…it’s not unpredictable, it NEEDS to be unpredictable…there is no fringe on society these days, there’s nothing new happening…so STAGNANT>>>i enjoy the dum dum girl song though.

Hey go back in time and you’ll see the same thing – bands being inspired by the music that came before them. It’s natural, it’s human and there’s nothing wrong with that. If right now “echoey reverb” is popular, then so be it. It would still exist even if nu metal was making a comeback instead of good shit like harmonies, melodies, and analog recording techniques. People need to chill the fuck out. There’s other styles of music being made so go seek it out. But newness for the sake of newness is a bad idea and the only good music that comes from any real place will be bound to have traceable influences. People who bitch and moan about bands being so nostalgic with their sound are even guiltier of being nostalgic for a “better time in music”
okay, yea, people did the same thing back then – ‘bands became inspired by the music that came before them’…but when this happened in the past, bands would make something new…rock came from blues and country, then you have punk music and hip-hop…all of these genres were new sounds for their time, but these days people are just vibing off of hippies and punk and goth and folk and the 90′s….but no one of the current music scene has made something that has never been done before…and i agree with you, newness for the sake of newness IS stupid…it’s interesting that we haven’t had newness for the sake of art and creativity. and yea, you can find new things if you look for it, i agree with you on that…but i don’t need to “chill the fuck out” because i wasn’t realy being mad…but i understnd why you would think so.

you have taken what i said way to seriously if you feel the urge to say ‘get off you’re soapbox’. i never got on a soapbox. this is the interweb, no one gets on a soapbox – people put people on the soapbox by reading things and taking it too seriously.
i do like the song….the ‘lo-fi echoey’ thing is supposed to be taken as more of a general statement.

What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?
hey illia and keba, if y’all hate it so much, start your own bands. the fact of the matter is a good song is a good song and ddg have plenty of them and they just keep on coming. every single band doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel to be good, they just have to write good songs. I would love to hear Keba’s musical output hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
no one ever said they hated it…i never said every single band needs to reinvent the wheel…i was actually making a broader statement about music in general…it’s just that this song made me think about it and i decided to leave a comment about my thoughts….and i do write music and i’ll admit, it’s not original sounding…..but that doesn’t mean i can’t ponder about the state of music….i probably should have clarified that….this wasn’t an attack against DDG, it was just an idea i had as a result of the song.

…i knew people would get mad..haha…the thing about the interweb is that you can never say things without people misunderstanding because there is no tone of voice no body language no nothing and people will just assume that you’re being a asshole…which is completely understnadable…even me saying ‘i knew people would get mad’ is a reflection of this…

Interesting song, and pleasant (in a rocker way, if there is a such thing). Nothing too outrageous, but not boring either.
I’d give them a chance if they were ever playing in Texas. =)

Trendy? This sounds like old girl rock bands. Not to mention that some songs are a bit ironic about how other girl bands of similar type succeed.
Can somebody PLEASE direct me to where I can I find the lyrics to the “Stiff Little Fingers” song? I suck at deciphering even simple lyrics ( for years I thought that Jim Morrison was saying “Don’t you love her Bradley”….oh, the shame) so there isn’t a chance in hell I’ll be able to figure this one on my own.
