Joanna Newsom‘s Have One on Me is finally out today, and NPR is offering a full album stream here. If the prospect of 3 LPs of new Newsom seems daunting, start with the incredible “Baby Birch” and the heartbreakingly intimate “Go Long” — two of the album’s defining tracks, both of which today’s Pitchfork review inexplicably failed to mention — or Newsom’s perfect Joni-esque jaunt through Laurel Canyon, “Good Intentions Paving Company.” Have One On Me is available on beautifully-packaged 3xLP here.

chris, I bet they failed to mention those songs because they don't have good ears and they don't really seem to care about the music. i, for one, hate pitchfork, but love this album.
'81, Baby Birch, In California & Does Not Suffice were the most immediate tracks for me.
Not that interested in a stream though at this point!

I'm sorry but there's no way anyone can determine how good or how much "filler" this album has at this point. Really wish Pitchfork, et. al. would have held off on their weak review until they properly digested the thing.

jeez, they gave the album a great review. i'm constantly amazed at the pitchfork hate around the web. yes, they're big, but that doesn't mean they're bad. don't like them, don't read them. but yeah… great record so far… probably too long, but that's her call. an editor is a fantastic thing though. i wish she would have made a decision similar to radiohead with kid a and amnesiac. music all from the same sessions, but split into two albums for digestability.
Not that those tracks aren't beautiful, but I don't think I could last 2 hours of it in one sitting. As for the 9.2: that's P4K.

I, for one, can't believe Chris didn't mention "Esme," my favorite song. But I guess that's what is great about different opinions, although Chris doesn't seem to think so.

and yeah Joseph, "esme" is great too, but this wasn't a review. i'm not ripping on anyone's opinions, dude, simply feel that it's weird they ignored two of the best songs.
I have to say I found the p4k review a bit lacking especially when giving an album so much love in the score.
Not that I think they are wrong particularly and not that I think they should dissect the album blow by blow but I am not sure the review got across at all why the reviewer thought the album is good.
I say this from the point of view of having much respect for p4k reviews and an appreciation for giving albums essay style reviews as opposed to four lines like the rags.
esme reminds me of heart of glass for some reason and i always skip. but the album is extremely good considering its duration. and amazing percussion work all over.
also maybe it is high time for joni mitchell to become hip. who knows?

That is truly inexplicable. How is PFork supposed to be my one-stop-shop for adopting musical opinions when the reviews don't even jive with MY personal opinions?
The Washington Post, Chicago Reader, Time Out New York, LA Times, and Village Voice didn't mention those songs either! Weird and inexplicable, indeed.

i can't say i'm surprised that they failed to mention two of the albums best tracks. hell, in the review of 'ys' they failed to mention that bill callahan appears on "only skin."
