I've had a few requests for more some recommendations on Brazilian music, so here we go. The fact there's been sort of a lull in the last few weeks in new releases has contributed to me listening almost exclusively to the Eccentric Soul albums and Soul Jazz Records' Tropicalia compilation. Now, I'm no expert on Brasil's Tropicalia movement; I actually know next to nothing about it. But I can't even begin to express how much I love this compilation of genius Brazilian psych-pop. It hasn't left my car since the day I got it, and it's helped me understand where a ton of my favorite artists (Beck, namely) are coming from. My only complaint is that at 20 tracks, it's too short. I am dying to hear more of this stuff, and it's already led to my purchases of about 5 of the individual artists' records. One thing I do know for sure: this is an ideal primer on the history of Tropicalia for those who would like an entry point into the genre.
