We had the privilege of premiering a song from Melbourne artist Esther Edquist aka Sweet Whirl just about a year ago, and while it was and is certainly lovely, it didn't quite prepare me for her how much I would adore her incredible new album How Much Works, coming this spring on Australian label Chapter Music. It's easily one of the most beautiful things I've heard thus far in 2020, and smoldering lead single/piano torch song "Something I Do" is a perfect introduction to the album's quiet, yearning intensity and understated, poignant brilliance. "To be honest I was inspired to write this song while I was seeing this total a-hole and felt like I had to carry the flame of my desire around with me all the time, lest it die," Edquist says about the song, adding, "I was listening to Cat Power's The Greatest at the time. Minimal perfection." Chan Marshall would certainly be proud of this one. Watch the James Thomson-directed video, starring Sweet Whirl, below. How Much Works is out May 29th.
