Gorilla vs. Bear Modern Yacht Rock 2020 Summer Mix
Presenting the 5th annual installment in our series of modern yacht rock summer mixtapes: this one almost didn't happen, so thanks to those of you who demanded it. Given our current global situation, it made sense to loosely base this year's mix on Katie Puckrik's newly coined "dark yacht" (lol) subgenre, which she used to describe Joni Mitchell's "accidental yacht rock" classic, "The Hissing of Summer Lawns", honing in on the low-key seedier, more miserable aspects of the genre that we find so intriguing and enduring. Modern torchbearers of the classic soft-rock spirit -- TOPS, Men I Trust, Connan Mockasin, Tame Impala, et al. -- sit alongside weird edits, vaporwave reanimations, obscure Euro rarities, and shimmering City Pop gems in the mix. And like we've always maintained, we're not trying to adhere to the yacht rock purist's standards here; it's more of a vibe, you know it when you hear it.
