Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico -- the evocatively titled new record from New Mexico duo Marissa Macias + Lauren Green, aka Tan Cologne -- is a beautiful collection of magically transportive, gloriously narcotic dream-pop that brings to mind a more cosmic Mazzy Star, or possibly Beach House if they came from Death Valley instead of Baltimore. It would undoubtedly still be one of our favorite and most listened-to records of 2020 even if we weren't mired in this now omnipresent collective predicament. But given the current state of things, the record has taken on an extra, almost mystical escapist vibe for us, a welcome late-night vessel for drifting off into a hazy and serene celestial desertscape (we don't take psychedelics), if only in 30 minute doses.
So naturally, we're extremely psyched that the duo made us this sprawling, mind-expanding mix, a nearly 3-hour-long journey of discovery that traverses some of the same lucid dream-like zones as Cave Vaults, with tracks by the likes of Jessica Pratt, Fleetwood Mac, Julia Holter, Lower Dens, Broadcast, and a wealth of amazing songs I'd never heard before. "We decided to make an extended, slow-burn mix called 'lava lamp' to help pass the time and cruise the body into a meditative melt," Tan Cologne tells us, adding, "It includes some of our inspirations and favorite artists that have permeated our minds."
