Here’s my theory: the album is called Duality because Captain Murphy is two people. From what I can tell, those two people are Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler the Creator. Their voices are inconsistently distorted throughout the mixtape, making them tough to identify. At many points I’m pretty sure I can here Earl’s cadence and what sounds like his voice slightly distorted. I can also hear Tyler the Creator’s cadence and voice, especially when he talks about the virgin whispering in his hear. “I told her I could smell it” — who else could that be? Also Captain Murphy’s Twitter page reminds me so much of Tyler’s. It makes sense that Captain Murphy and others have adamantly deniy being from OF. That’s because Captain Murphy is a creative artistic composite, a cartoon character that has nothing to do with the OF project. Of course, in music as in all art, it’s the work itself that matters and not the identity of the artist. Thoughts?
