You won’t catch too much new R&B here on the site, but we’ve been vibing to that new Frank Ocean a little bit lately, and this new mixtape that dropped today from Toronto’s The Weeknd has been on repeat all morning with no signs of fading. Check the ill warped Beach House sample on the sexed-up “The Party & the After Party” — one of two Beach House-sampling jams on the tape — and download the whole thing for free below, or at the-weeknd.com:

Lo-fi R&B is the new shit!
good look
I hate how some of this stuff sneaks through the net with universal praising by the music blogs i trust and love. It’s not particularly offensive and I know you even acknowledge that R&B will not become a regular feature here, but to see everyone jump on this because the others are is a pretty sad thing. In fact the longer this song goes on, the worse it gets. This is identical, bar a Beach House sample, to the music played on the radio stations we skip when we’re looking for something good. Juz sayin’
i agree, this sounds like drake and bruno mars on lo-fi
im starting to feel sick
Drake yes; Bruno Mars no.
Have you heard So Far Gone? That really makes you sick? Forget that shit with Nicki Minaj, listen to November 18th. This is not identical to radio r&b. The production is unique and different, and the lyrics aren’t corny and superficial.
Tdudehe dude has it right. To SRY BT: who do you refer to as “we” for those who skip over the radio? Is it that clique of cats really into music that you now identify yourself with and can’t let go of because of your hidden self-consciousness that just won’t let go even after grade school?
They know shit about music. They just know there is an unearned status of elitism gained from hating on pop and having coined everything on the radio, “pure shit” because the genre/artist/song has not been authorized by their peer group or favorite music blog.
This shit is hot. Justin Timberlake’s solo albums are hot. Arcade Fire is hot. That ultra underground band you heard when you visited the nearest big city last month is probably not. I heard of Arcade Fire through Pitchfork and JT through clear channel. Bless both their souls for that.
Start lovin’ music for the sake of music. Stop hatin’ ’cause you think it makes you a respectable critic.
Happy Easter. The in-laws got me drunk enough for me to take time to rant on Gorillavsbear.
Complaining about music because it isn’t underground enough for you is the new cliche, it’s not cool to say that anymore. Also, please find me a song on the radio that sounds like anything on this record lyrically or musically…
The music I skip at least.
nah, this is actually pretty great. funny email address though
Love The Weeknd, this is good shit!
fuck da haters this is great

This is a great new R&B album. GET IT!
you peeps have problems with your ears… this is actually on of the best albums I have heard in a while, maybe not your thing but nobody in the world can tell me that this shit sucks…
Yea, I agree with Soulz – not for everyone, but there’s no way in hell this shit sucks.
I think theres a place for a little rnb. I do find myself waiting for something a little more cutting edge to happen though. It doesn’t suck, but it does kinda fit in with top 40 rnb. i like the big snare though.
Great album. Great.
And Drake effing sucks. Any time you google this, you get results that “Drake approves” – as far as I’m concerned that is the worst endorsement ever.
I think this album is great. For a more “mainstream” of this, check out the Diddy-Dirty Money album “Last Train To Paris”
Its a very similar musical landscape that both albums create.
Good Stuff.
oh good grief…everyone who says this sounds like radio rnb DOES NOT LISTEN TO RADIO RNB.
this is like if portishead made rnb. somehow it’s depressing and sexy at the same time.
This shit is crazy, on repeat!
Real smooth and uniques sound. I’ll definitely pass this on!
dude its so many freaking hipsters on this site… i like radio and indie music whats wrong with liking both… pretentious ass people
Just grabbed this. Diggin’ it.
“Frank Ocean – Nostalgia, Ultra” is amazing. Two great albums here for 2011. Thanks for posting these.
I’ve never liked or listened to any R&B and consequently it took me a long time and a lot of hype for me to finally give this a chance.
Surprisingly I really like this.
To me its a mix between the downtempo/chillwave/electro stuff that I enjoy and the dark and depressing indie rock/pop/electro/whatever that I listen to.
Its an interesting blend of styles and for me it really works.
