I can’t wait for the reunion.
huge bummer, but that’s such a great parting note. “…but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.” man.
sad news in the rock world.
Extremely sad and unfortunate, but not unexpected.
Every so often, you get an explosion of creativity and raw talent that takes everyone’s breath away. Can’t last forever, but such a joy whilst it goes on. I think it’s good that they took a bow gracefully, but yeah, it’s sad all the same. Pat x
Its about time. The White Stripes’ music/persona have been nothing more but a force of early 2000′s indie-rock-nostalgia for several years.
Move over and and make way for more contemporary acts to fill the void.
You, sir, are a moron. The Stripes are one of the few bands of the last ten years that history will truly remember. Go listen to your “contemporary” chillwave garbage while the rest of us mourn the loss of a visionary band.
@jack Not all contemporary is “chillwave garbage.” Maybe music that is actually innovative rather than paying homage to 70s rock. The White Stripes had some good ideas but I wouldn’t exactly call them visionary. More like a throwback band to old blues/rock. They weren’t bad at all, just weren’t treading any new ground. Only thing unique about them was that they were a two piece. The White Stripes were merely a breath of fresh air for the stale mainstream musical climate at the time.
I agree that a lot of chillwave is great, I love what guys like Toro y Moi and Neon Indian are doing with their sound.
However, the point was that the White Stripes were truly one of the last great rock bands that we will see anytime soon, and it sucks they disbanded. Although they were derivative to an extent, who ISN’T in music these days? Their vision was creating warped blues/garage rock for the 21st century (in a two piece, as you mentioned), and they proved that staying true to the DIY aesthetic that indie music was founded upon can still make you one of the biggest bands in the world. Whether people don’t realize it yet, they will be missed.
I’m not debating that the White Stripes are a band to remember. In fact i think their first three albums changed a lot for indie rock. However those albums had their time and place in the particular zeitgeist of the early 00′s. Unfortunately, their artistic output began to waver with their last albums and I’m sure they realized that. Music and art are in a constant state of flux. The White Stripes aren’t immune to that. I love what they did (initially) but Im ready to move on and explore new ground.
Thank fuck for that. They’ve been hurting my ears for ages
Who is the White Stripes?
wah wah. about time.
i´m very sad !!! Such a great band ………. :-(
