Badlands is the debut full-length from “trans-Pacific nomad”/crooner Alex Zhang Hungtai, aka Dirty Beaches. Forget for a second that it sounds like he copped that moniker straight from the chillwave name generator, and get lost in this lovelorn, hopelessly romantic track from the record’s gorgeous and more pensive second half, which Alex promises is made up of “ballads and dirges laced with murder and lament.” Edit: Thanks to the commenter that pointed out the Françoise Hardy sample.

Dirty Beaches :: Lord Knows Best
Badlands is out March 29 on Zoo Music. Catch Dirty Beaches on tour with Dum Dum Girls later this winter.

So good he chose the “romantic ballad direction of True Blue” rather than some weird stuff he also made.
I’m liking “Lord knows best”!
Beautiful, beautiful stuff. Love both jams, but True Blue is something else.
Hey no credit? Posted both 2 days ago :)
I am loving the new album as well.

whoa i knew that loop was familiar but couldn’t place it, thanks
Yea, this is just a sample of “Voila” by Francoise Hardy. All he added was some deep Serge Gainsbourg-esque vocals with an over-abundance of reverb. Thoroughly unoriginal.
yeah the last guy already pointed out the sample
Thought this was pretty original all things considered, Matt the Musicologist.
his album sounds like someone who gre up listening to hip hop and is embracing hip hop ideas to make music thats not hip hop. dats what i think.
Bingo Bango! He is also a great performer. He’s doing some very simple, kinda ballsy, with great results. It’s super minimal but very expressive.
Liking ‘True Blue’ a lot more than the other track. The song he sampled is better than his version IMO.
a little bit of a ‘twin peaks’ vibe to it
gotta say, I love it
yes! i’m looking forward to hearing this whole album. he rules live.
lord knows best and true blue are the best tracks on the new album, i didnt like other stuff
Remember a time when ppl would argue that ’sampled music or ‘Rap’ is not music!’. Seems like we’re still at it huh.
This track is beautiful. As is the rest of the record. Yeah, True Blue is great, but so is Sweet Sixteen and 100 Highways and Speedway King and this – Lord Knows Best. And Dirty Beaches are just digging in.
He also has a pretty extensive back catalogue….some really inventive, beautiful music that everyone should hear.
And everyone should definitely hear this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSiHLI6C5p8
You ever hear Frank Sinatra do the same song by Dean Martin? Of course not because youre a bunch of fuckheads, listen, the music is beautiful why change it, so the guy wanted to do it with his voice and his feelings, the production is eloquent, in my opinion the concept is genius, not “unoriginal”
