Planet Mu recently sent over She Was Coloured In, the shimmering/sprawling new effort from Irish duo Solar Bears. The record has a floating, undeniably cinematic feel throughout (the label specifically cites 1973 animated sci-fi classic Fantastic Planet), as evidenced by the oddly moving cosmic vibes on album standout “Neon Colony.”

Not sure I can agree with their label. That’s a really far stretch to compare them to Alain Goraguer. I guess both this and La Planete Sauvage soundtrack are without vocals. That MUST be it. I suggest Planet Mu giving that soundtrack another listen.
I run their label, Planet Mu, and can say that I have NEVER compared Solar Bears to Goraguer (and am well acquainted with La Planete Sauvage), I don’t know where GvsB got that from? Perhaps from here:

Where 20JFG describe the album as “one of the most astonishing albums that 20jazzfunkgreats … have heard in a long time- like Subway soundtracking Fantastic Planet or something.”
when Marcus sent over the record he mentioned that very quote, didn’t realize where it originated. Also for the record, I didn’t take it as a direct comparison to Goraguer’s work, and that’s not what I said; more that the solar bears record could very easily soundtrack a similar film.
Great to hear some new music coming out of Ireland at last!
Hey
This is John from the band. We referenced Fantastic Planet with our song The Quiet Planet. It is very fair to say both Rian and I adore the work of Alain Goraguer for that movie.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Comparisons aside, great song!
Thanks
First time listener of Solar Bears here…”Neon Colony” great introductory experience. Great way to pop my Solar Bear cherry. =)
Switched it up on me about 3:02, threw me off a bit, but got me back on board at 3:35 and solidified the “I’d go to a show/listening session of theirs” at around 4:45..
Keep it up!
