Kairos is the adventurous new full-length from White Hinterland, due March 9 on Dead Oceans. Influenced by a move from the East Coast to Portland and her recent listening habits (among other things), the new record finds Casey Dienel eschewing the jazzier/folk steez of her earlier work in favor of spectral, slinky modern R & B and minimal pop -- think Arthur Russell, Glasser, Dirty Projectors, the xx, tune-yards, et al. -- a sound previously hinted at on the group's stunning Timberlake/Russell covers that surfaced late last year. On the surface, a dramatic shift, but Kairos feels like an undeniably graceful, surprisingly natural step up. "Icarus" is the album's ethereal, spooky/sexy opening track:
