Coming on the heels of his endearingly awkward conversation with Zooey Deschanel, Brian Wilson rolled through the streets of London in the back of a cab on the latest edition of Black Cab Sessions. The legend sings the title track from his new LP, That Lucky Old Sun, but the highlight comes at around the 2:15 mark, when they break out an old classic:

I read the autobiography of Brian Wilson this summer, and all I have to say is Mike Love sucks and Brian Wilson is awesome. And “Our Prayer” is one of the most beautiful a cappella pieces ever.
“‘Til I Die” is my all-time fave. The Beach Boys put it out just as the majority of folks thought they were fading into an oldies act, and it up and surpasses most everything they’d ever recorded. Still blows me away after a hundred listens.

God Only Know without a doubt. It is such a simplistic song and has a simple sentiment. In addition, I love it at the end of Boogie Nights.

My personal favorite Brian/Beach Boys track. The harpsichord part on this is fantastic and the chorus has those seemingly discordant harmonies/chord changes. I hear it and think that shouldn’t work– but dammit it does. Oh and the ending is just gorgeous. Love this one.

My favorite moment is when the Beach Boys guest starred on the episode of “Full House” when the Tanners (plus Uncles Jesse, Joey) thought they were shipwrecked on the desserted island when in fact the Beach Boys (I believe only Mike Carl, Bruce and the wormy Al) were on the other side of the island with about a trillion fans. Then they invited the entire family to come up on stage and rock with them.
Of course, Mike Love, being the least talented of the actual band, always ended up schmoozing with Uncle Jesse and his band of Rippers.
Absolutely ‘The Warmth of the Sun.’ As kids, we used to rollerskate in our basement while listening to our dad’s well-worn copy of Endless Summer. Beach Boys music still doesn’t sound right to me without a good deal of pops and hiss.

“God Only Knows” manages to incorporate elements of rock/pop and classical almost effortlessly. One of those tunes that first provided a glimpse of how far 60s rock could go. They simply don’t make guys like this anymore (sadly).
