We went to see this tonight, but thanks to some kid that didn’t know how to work the popcorn machine, the theater was evacuated about 15 minutes into the film (which, coincidentally, was just starting to kick ass.) So, we might as well talk about the band whose show I skipped to go see the movie in the first place. I’ve been digging Black Lips-homies the King Khan and BBQ Show’s stuff lately, but somehow I totally missed King Khan’s earlier, painfully under-blogged 2007 project, King Khan & the Shrines (thanks to We Shot J.R. for clueing me in).

The stuff I’ve been listening to from their What Is?! LP this evening is a perfect blend of ’60s pop/garage/psych/R&B that recalls James Brown and Detroit garage-soul heroes the Dirtbombs. And, like the Black Lips, these dudes don’t take themselves too seriously. Both of these jams are great + highly recommended, etc.

Here’s a cool video from the band that makes me regret missing the show even more.
